Beijing 2008 Olympics
BTS has extended its long term contract with NBC Olympics to provide catering and hospitality services to its more than 2500 crew, on air talent, and staff. NBC will utilize BTS to manage their culinary and logistics needs for the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China as well as the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia.
BTS has already hired more than 50 international staff from around the globe to work on the culinary and operational management staff for the Beijing Games. BTS will service NBC’s crew at 6 different Olympic Venues including the largest venue, the International Broadcast Center, serving more than 1300 guests for 45 days. During the Games period most of the venues will operate on a 24 hour basis serving up to 4 meals per day. In addition, BTS will provide services to the NBC News division which includes all the United States NBC affiliates. The popular NBC Today Show will also use BTS for its catering needs during the Olympic Games.
Behind The Scenes will develop and operate a centralized distribution system for all its food and beverage products. Many of the menu ingredients are being imported into the country from places as Australia and Singapore. While BTS uses many local vendors during this event and other similar large scale events, the Olympics in China is unique in that many Western style food products are not available in the volume BTS will require, this results in establishing an import supply chain system. As you can imagine the project has a great deal of logistics planning involved with it beyond typical menu planning and execution.
BTS will train and employee more than 250 staff for the NBC Contract alone. This includes staff from Starbucks Coffee Company, who will operate a temporary café location within BTS’s dining room at the IBC. BTS will be responsible for training and managing the local and international staff to HAACP standards and to assure that BTS’s high standards of health and safety procedures are adhered to.
In addition to the NBC contract, Behind The Scenes has also been approached by other major Olympic Sponsor groups as well as other Western Country Olympic Teams to cater to their corporate hospitality pavilions. It will be a busy summer in Beijing for BTS, as we are one of a small handful of Western Style food service operations that will be allowed to operate in Beijing during the games. Our background, experience, and quality reputation with the Olympic movement continues to grow.
